Unfortunately you have to choose at least one to move forward. If only we could go back in time and not choose the Guilford House. It was the worst choice we made for my father.

They were interacting and including everybody. The staff treats their patient's with professionalism and truly care about them. Not only do they work hard in their physical therapy to insure their strength, they also feed them fresh food so that they get the proper vitamins and nutrition they need while recovering. His nurse had no idea what could be wrong - maybe he had a blood clot she said. They told us he was having a great day and had been up and happy, but... Just to be on the safe side she thought it was a good idea to have his leg looked at, so as a precaution were sending him by ambulance to the hospital. I think a five-year old could have taken one look at Dad's leg and recognized that something was very wrong. Dad was in excruciating pain and such bad shape he went straight to a trauma room at the hospital and 10 days later he died. The official, State of Connecticut coroners' report states Dad died as a result of 'blunt force trauma' to his lower extremity.

Unprofessional staff from the abrasive and unempathetic Administrator to the staff who spends more time on their cell phones than checking on residents. No communication between shifts, no accountability, it's always an excuse or someone else's fault when there is a discrepancy.

It seemed too good to be true and as it turns out it was. Dad was initially welcomed with open arms. After he fell on their watch, broke his hip and was diagnosed with dementia, everything changed. That's when the Guilford House social worker, administrators and owner showed their true colors. They put a tremendous amount of pressure on my family to find 'alternative arrangements' for Dad.

When I arrived on Tuesday she had already been sent to the doctors office, 90 minutes early. The Guilford House allowed AMR to take her 90 minutes early and dump her with the doctors office. If she was alert this would have been bad enough, but in a semi-confused state, she had no idea where she was or what was going on.

They have entertainment, things like trivia games, ice cream social, there's a whole lot going on. I saw some women sitting there and knitting or they just get together and chitchat. Because they're short-staffed, they can't spend as much personal time with her. The furniture and some of the stuff are a little dated, nothing is torn or dirty, but they need to update and buy some new things.

I was told by the new facility that this was delayed because the responsible people at the Guilford House were always "on the phone" when they called, and they would never return their calls. Given that I had multiple instances where the Guilford House personnel did not return calls as promised, I can believe this. One cynical interpretation is that they purposely delayed to get a couple more days of Medicare billing.When we finally left, I had to wheel my mom and her belongings to the curb myself.
